*ASATTAHIR INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION (AIF) PARTICIPATED IN A 1-DAY PUBLIC AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON TANKER ACCIDENTS AND FIRES IN SOKOTO STATE ORGANIZED BY THE NATIONAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY (NEMA)*

ASATTAHIR International Foundation (AIF) has on the 29 May 2025, participated in a one-day public awareness programme on tanker accidents and fire outbreaks, organized by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Sokoto state.

In his welcoming address, the Head of Operations at NEMA, Alh. Aliyu Shehu Kafindangi, thanked all stakeholders for their presence and ongoing support.

He highlighted the recurring incidents of tanker accidents and explosions across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and raised concerns about the dangerous practice of fuel scooping by citizens at accident scenes.

He stressed the need for strict enforcement of regulations regarding the roadworthiness of tankers, regular training for tanker drivers, enhanced emergency response mechanisms, and the improvement of critical infrastructure such as roads.

Sessions during the event included an overview and statistical presentation of fuel tanker accidents and fire incidents in Nigeria. The Zonal Commandant of the Federal Fire Service CP Muhammad in his presentation, revealed that no fewer than 172 tanker-related incidents had been recorded from January 2009 to date, resulting in numerous fatalities and extensive destruction of property.

AIF was represented by its Head of Programs and Research, Rufus Yagkong, who shared insights into the Foundation’s contributions such as research, sensitization and stakeholders engagement all geared toward reducing fire incidents in Sokoto state.

He underscored the importance of regular training and continuous public awareness campaigns on fire safety, particularly in vulnerable communities.

In his closing remarks, the Head of Operations of NEMA expressed appreciation for the active participation and meaningful contributions from all stakeholders.

He called for strengthened inter-agency collaboration and encouraged participants to disseminate the key safety messages within their respective organizations and communities.

The programme concluded with a group photograph and networking among participants.
