ASATTAHIR International Foundation Participated in a Two-Day Training Workshop of Stakeholders on the Elimination of Gender Based Volence against Women:

As a critical stakeholder in the fight agains the scourge of Gender Based Violence and other Harmful Practices, a delegation of ASATTAHIR International Foundation participated in a stakeholders’ interaction on the 19th day of June, 2020. The interaction was organized by the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA). The program is funded by the EU-UN Spotlight Initiative.

ASATTAHIR was represented by the Executive Secretary, Prof. Yahaya Tanko Baba, the Legal Adviser of the Foundation, Barrister Rashidat Mohammed and the Chairman and Founder, Aliyu Sidi Attahiru.

During the interaction, valuable contributions were made by stakeholders, particularly the ASATTAHIR Team. Prof. Baba intervened on wide range of issues dealing rape and various dimensions of abuses undermining the diginity, safety and well-being of women and girls in Nigeria, particularly in Sokoto state. Accordingly, the need for the revision and repeal of existing laws and speedy dispensation of justice will serve as deterence to others as well as protect the victims.
Barrister Rashidat on the other hand emphasized the need for the reform of the justice system to guarantee the protection of the diginity of women and girls in Nigeria. It was announced at the meeting that the Federal Government
accepted the proposal by Barrister Rashidat on the need for a special court to hear and prosecute rape cases. This was celebrated as giant stride in the campaign against Gender Based Volence in Nigeria.
The interaction rounded off with a call on CSOs and NGOs to be resolute in the support for victims of GBV. FIDA was particularly encouraged to offer free legal services to poor and vulnerable victims to access justice. The team.posed for a group picture at end of the program.
