ASATTAHIR International Foundation (AIF) participated in the 2-day Civil Society Organization (CSO) Engagement Training on Polio Eradication in Nigeria, held between 17th-18th April 2025.
The training aimed to enhance the capacity of CSOs and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) in promoting polio vaccination through improved community engagement, effective communication strategies, and demand creation techniques. This initiative is a collaborative effort between UNICEF and the Centre for Communication and Social Impact (CCSI) and will be implemented with local CSOs and CBOs operating in Sokoto State.
Objectives the training was to strengthen the capacity of CSOs/CBOs to support community engagement, demand generation and behaviour change for polio eradication efforts.
Enhance CSOs/CBOs ability to address misinformation, build trust and mobilize communities for improved uptake of both polio and routine immunization services and to foster coordination among CSOs, government, and partners for effective planning, implementation and monitoring of polio eradicationactivities.
A series of core modules were delivered throughout the training, focusing on demand creation for Polio vaccination, effective community engagement, and interpersonal communication skills. These modules were designed to build the participants’ ability to mobilize communities, foster trust, and communicate persuasively with caregivers. Facilitators from UNICEF used a combination of presentations, discussions, and practical exercises, including role plays, to help participants reflect on field challenges and explore practical solutions.
One of the major highlights of the training was the breakout session, which provided hands-on experience with practical tools and strategies to address barriers to vaccination.
During this session, participants worked in groups and used scenario-based activities to develop strategies for overcoming resistance, engaging local influencers, and crafting context-specific health messages. This interactive approach enabled participants to learn from each other and apply their knowledge in a simulated environment.
The training provided a platform for participants to explore and adopt new approaches that could strengthen their future activities. Additionally, the event offered a networking opportunity to connect with other CSOs, which could lead to future collaborations in joint health advocacy and community mobilization efforts.
ASATTAHIR International Foundation (AIF) found the training to be highly impactful and aligned with its mission to improve health outcomes in vulnerable communities. The foundation is committed to applying the knowledge and strategies gained to enhance its polio eradication and routine immunization programs in Sokoto state. AIF also looks forward to continued collaboration with partners such as UNICEF, CCSI and local CBOs leveraging this partnership to support sustainable and community-centered health interventions across the state.
